In this hands-on class, you will create your own one-of-a-kind seascape, using photographs as inspiration. You will learn the fundamentals of needle felting, including safe needle handling, color blending, and techniques for building depth, texture, and layered compositions.
Beyond learning a new artistic skill, participants are invited to experience the meditative and calming qualities of needle felting, as they play with color, texture, and movement.
This class is open to students ages 12 and up and is suitable for beginners, including those with no prior experience in fiber arts or painting.
Please note: The workshop will be instructed in French, but the instructor will be happy to explain and assist in English as needed, making the experience accessible to all.
All materials are provided.
The class is led by Sophie Ancel, a French-American fiber artist based in San Diego. Often inspired by the sea and the natural world, she has been working with wool since 2007, drawn to its warmth, softness, and sculptural possibilities. Her felted works explore themes of journey, belonging, displacement, and our relationship with the Earth’s natural resources. Sophie’s pieces have been exhibited in galleries in San Diego and France and are available at the San Diego Museum of Art’s gift store. She regularly teaches needle felting workshops and enjoys sharing this tactile, meditative art form with curious and creative minds.
