CONFESSIONS OF A HITMAN directed by Luc Picard (2021)

This French Canadian movie is the incredible true story of a paid assassin who worked for the biker gangs of Quebec. 

Premiered at the 2021 Whistler Film Festival, Picard won the award for Best Director. The film received three Canadian Screen Award nominations at the 10th Canadian Screen Awards in 2022.

Seemingly dull-witted, this stuttering “average Joe” outsmarted police and the criminal underground for decades, committing 28 ‘hits’ in 25 years and while simultaneously turning informant when convenient. Living a very conventional lower-middle-class life with a deeply religious wife, no one would have suspected this very nondescript man of being Canada’s most successful professional assassin. In Confessions of a Hitman, Picard has constructed a true-life Canadian classic, one that captures a time and a place in Quebec’s history where biker gangs terrorized the streets, and society had moved away from the traditional constraints of the Catholic church. The banality of evil has never been more forcefully depicted as in Confessions of a Hitman. Don’t miss it.

Based on Gallant: confessions d'un tueur à gages, a 2015 non-fiction book written by Éric Thibault and Félix Séguin about Canadian contract killer Gerald Gallant, the film stars Picard as Gallant.

The movie is in French with subtitles in English.
