DELF vs. DALF vs. TCF: Which Certification Is Right for You?
Date Published: Today
Which French certification should you take?
If you're considering an official French certification, the acronyms alone can feel overwhelming: DELF, DALF, TCF. All three certify your French proficiency, but they serve different purposes. Here's a clear comparison to help you choose the right exam for your goals.
DELF — Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française
- Levels: A1, A2, B1, B2 (CEFR)
- Best for: Learners from beginner to upper-intermediate, including students aged 7+ ( Prim, Junior, and adult versions available)
- Validity: Permanent — a diploma, not a test
- Why take it: Recognised worldwide by universities and employers; a B2 DELF often exempts students from language entrance tests for French universities
DALF — Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française
- Levels: C1 and C2 (advanced to near-native)
- Best for: Advanced learners, university applicants to French institutions, professionals
- Validity: Permanent
- Why take it: The gold standard for academic and professional recognition of advanced French
TCF — Test de Connaissance du Français
- Format: A placement-style test — your score maps to a CEFR level rather than you choosing a level in advance
- Variants: TCF Tout Public, TCF Canada (for Canadian immigration), TCF IRN (for French residence/naturalisation), and more
- Validity: 2 years
- Why take it: Required for certain immigration and nationality procedures; ideal if you need to certify your current level quickly without preparing a specific level's exam
