The Alliance Française was created in 1883, by renowned personalities like Louis Pasteur, and Jules Verne, to name a few. In 2023, the Alliance celebrates its 140th anniversary and is the first cultural NGO in the world.

The Alliance Française San Diego was established in 1927 and has served hundreds of students yearly. We are part of a network of more than 100 chapters in the United States coordinated by the Federation of Alliances Françaises USA, and of more than 834 affiliates in 133 countries, located on every continent, and coordinated by the Fondation des Alliances Françaises

Our mission

The Alliance Française of San Diego (AFSD) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the French language and Francophone cultures throughout San Diego County.

We offer French classes for all ages and levels, available in group or private formats, both in person and online. As a certified exam center, we also provide official French language exams and certifications to help students validate their proficiency in French.

Beyond language learning, AFSD is a vibrant cultural center celebrating the richness and diversity of France, its overseas territories, and the many French-speaking cultures around the world. Through cultural events, social gatherings, and community programs, we create opportunities to experience Francophone culture right here in San Diego.

Our members also enjoy access to a welcoming French library with books and resources available to borrow.
