French Classes: Intermediate

 

Independant User: level B1 and B2

Level B1
Goals when completing level French 202, 203, 204 and 301. Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

French 202
Grammar:
transforming a verb into a noun, gender of nouns, structures to stress (C'est...qui, c'est....que), past tenses, passive form, passé composé + direct object complement , personal pronouns after à and de, time indicators (2) (pendant, depuis, de...à, en), structures to express advice: imperative, devoir + infinitive, si + present /future, il faut que + subjunctive, subjunctive to express necessity (1), pluperfect, indefinite pronouns and adverbs (quelqu'un, rien, personne, nulle part), adverbs.

Conversation:  press, radio, television, reporting a burglary, cinema, studies, formulas for formal letters and correspondence, impersonal formulas to express necessity (il est important / essentiel de...), formal and informal styles and lexical fields (1), job related expressions.

Know How To: understand newspapers titles, react / give one's opinion on a TV program, understand events in different media, testify, understand a movie review, understand a work-related classified ad, introduce oneself in a business context, understand and write a resume and a simple letter of motivation, give advice, alert someone, indicate necessary changes, talk about a professional experience, talk about one's work.

French 203
Grammar:  souhaiter que + subjunctive; espérer que + indicative; j'aimerais, je voudrais que + subjunctive; j'aimerais + infinitive; conditional tense to make a suggestion;  afin que + subjunctive, afin de + infinitive, pour, pour que; conditional for project and surreal situation; logical connectors to express cause and consequence (1) ; indirect pronouns y et en; avant de + infinitive, après + past infinitive; reported speech in the past; si + pluperfect, past conditional; recent past and near future in a narration in the past tense; regretter de + past infinitive; j'aurais aimé / voulu + infinitive; subjunctive to express necessity (2); contrast between subjunctive and indicative in completive clauses.

Conversation:  musical genres and music groups, wishing; verbs to express one's interests; structures to express a goal; travel; formulas to express approval or disapproval; chronological connectors.

Know-How to: express wishes and hopes for the future; suggest something; talk about one's centers of interest, one's commitments; express a goal; present a project; imagine a hypothetical situation; understand the summary and the presentation of a book; give one's feeling, justify one's choice; express cause and consequence; express approval and disapproval; talk about a change of life; understand a biography; report speech in the past; tell about an exceptional event, imagine a different past; express regrets; understand a manifesto and act upon it; take a position, express an opinion.

French 204
Grammar: expressing time (à partir de, dès, dès que, depuis, depuis que, jusqu'à ce que), double pronouns, expressing an opinion, expressing doubt, will, feeling, probability/hypothesis; contrast (par contre, alors que, d'un côté. de l'autre côté), cause and consequence (2), present participle for description and causality, pour + past infinitive; past conditional; bien que + subjunctive; opposition: pourtant, cependant; subjunctive to express a judgement, impersonal forms + subjunctive or infinitive; interrogative pronouns, compound relative pronouns, possessive pronouns.

Conversation: books and reading, lending/borrowing an object; school and equal opportunity; verbs expressing consequence; complaints; rules and regulations; exclamative turns of phrase to express indignation; expressing a positive /negative point of view; Internet jargon; blogs..

Know-How To: narrate an event step by step; talk about one's readings; ask to borrow an object; express one's opinions and feelings; evoke differences; express one's irritation and impatience; understand arguments; understand and comment facts about the global society; understand / write a formal letter, a petition; express one's indignation; protest; point out a past action as cause; reproach; express one's point of view on a controversial topic; understand the principal statements of a discussion; express one's reservations; judge, make a recommendation, alert someone; get information on / describe an object, a novelty, a means of communication; react in writing to an ad / ask for more information / more details about a service ; choose a type of correspondence and write it.

French 301

Conversation for intermediate advanced students B1

This once-a -week class focuses on conversation topics. A good way to reinforce your conversational skills. Excellent for students achieving levels 202 to 301.

Level B2
Goals when completing level French 302, 303 and 304: Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Intermediate-Advanced: Grammaire & Conversation B2
This once-a -week class focuses on conversation topics. A good way to reinforce your conversational skills. Excellent for students achieving levels 302 to 304.
